God bless Harry for all he did that has benefitted me, my family and all working men and women. Harry used to say that in life there are lifters and leaners. Let's be lifters in keeping his memory alive and continuing his great work.

I was a Local 3 'A' Div. member (as was my father before me) from 1960 to 1984 during which time Brother Harry Van Arsdale Jr. was...and still is...the organized labor icon of his times. I shall never forget his fiery speeches at the monthly Local meetings and inspiration he gave all of us to always remain vigilant in securing better working and living conditions for organized labor. Thanks for this opportunity to express my feelings and debt of gratitude in memory and tribute to this great Union Man and a 'well done' to you for constructing this website. Thank you!

I was lucky enough to have been around while Harry was still with us. I met and talked with him and a few of the people mentioned in the book. He is one of my all time personal top 5 respected people who I feel is responsible for the person I am today and even with that I wouldn't even feel worthy of the privilege to shine his shoes. He was a great leader and a great man.

I am a first time father at the age of 47 as of Monday June 5th 2006 It is clear that Harry Van Arsdale Jr. had foresight. That vision with the help of Local Union #3 and it's members has made this dream of mine as well as my wife's and both of our families possible and finally come true. My son Julian and all of us owe much to this great man.

I had the pleasure of working in Local #3 from 1985-1986. Along with many other local and traveling brothers/ sisters I was there to attend the wonderful mass upon his passing. May there be others like him to follow in his footsteps.

As a 3rd generation contractor, I knew Mr. Van Arsdale in the periods of my life when I was a contractor's son, an apprentice electrician, and then as a contractor. At about 10 years old as a contractors son, I remember my father brought me to a union breakfast. I heard the speakers, and while I did not really understand the point of their speeches, I do remember being mesmerized listening to Harry Van Arsdale as he spoke. Then as an apprentice, I was fortunate enough to be present at one of our union meetings at Roosevelt Auditorium when Harry spoke to the audience. The 50 minutes he spoke seemed to be over in a flash, except this time I knew what he was talking about. He made his topics relate to each of us. The usually rowdy crowd (many of us had visited Harry's Bar before the meeting) was silent as he spoke. Then as a young contractor, I was fortunate to be invited on an educational trip for members of the JIB Committee that Harry put together to visit the NY School of Osteopathic Medicine and then to one of his friends, Dr. Hank Viscardi, a leader in the rehabilitation of disabled workers. I remember again being mesmerized as Dr. Viscardi and Harry spoke about their past and what they saw for the future. Listening to the recording, reminds me of the way Harry spoke and does bring back these warm memories. It makes me anxious to hear more.
