At about 10 years old as a contractors son, I remember my father brought me to a union breakfast. I heard the speakers, and while I did not really understand the point of their speeches, I do remember being mesmerized listening to Harry Van Arsdale as he spoke. Then as an apprentice, I was fortunate enough to be present at one of our union meetings at Roosevelt Auditorium when Harry spoke to the audience. The 50 minutes he spoke seemed to be over in a flash, except this time I knew what he was talking about. He made his topics relate to each of us. The usually rowdy crowd (many of us had visited Harry's Bar before the meeting) was silent as he spoke. Then as a young contractor, I was fortunate to be invited on an educational trip for members of the JIB Committee that Harry put together to visit the NY School of Osteopathic Medicine and then to one of his friends, Dr. Hank Viscardi, a leader in the rehabilitation of disabled workers. I remember again being mesmerized as Dr. Viscardi and Harry spoke about their past and what they saw for the future. Listening to the recording, reminds me of the way Harry spoke and does bring back these warm memories. It makes me anxious to hear more.
